Debate
In 1419, Jamachen Choje Sakya Yeshe, established the Sera Monastery, adjacent to the Potala Palace. Every afternoon, monks gather in an open courtyard to debate the scriptures. Tibetan debate involves two parties: a defender (dam bca' ba), who answers, and a questioner (rigs lam pa), who asks the question. The defender puts forth assertions for which he is held accountable. The challenger raises qualms to the defender's assertions for which he is not subject to reprisal. Many topics might be debated, one such might be "What does the moment mean? Does it refer to a brief moment or to a longer one?"
