  Gimp is an open source image software like photoshop, minus all the frills that come along with the price tag. Scrips are plugins or ready made recipes for an action you'd like done (or short cut) ie. to get a lomo effect, that have been made by a special breed of community I owe many thanks to. Their web site explains its self well and is easy to get to grips with. I hope many more people get to enjoy it too and thank you all the good comments.
