Experiment with side lighting to create profile.
This photo has been digitally retouched.
I worked from a colour RAW file and converted it to black and white using the channel mixer to switch it to monocrome, with the blue channel as the highest. I changed the levels to make the background pure black and to add contrast. I also brought emphasis to the skin texture by dodging highlights and burning shadows.
