Great one- did you know the guy (Colin?) or did you ask him to pose?

A great shot. The lighting compliments the subject matter perfect. I love this one.

like it Liz, a little more light on the wetsuit, (perhaps this is a job for Photoshop??), and I'm not sure about the tree and the distracting folks on the lake bank. I would have moved him/frogman slightly to his left and I think it would have cleaned up the image. The lighting on frogman's face is just right though. It's tricky when you have a matt black suit material sucking up all that light. I think you could sort out all my criticisms in Photoshop but that is the lazy approach and will in the end have you sitting for hours on end in front of a computer monitor getting RSI and vitamin D deficient. Much better to control the elements within the camera. Remember 'set up' portraits like this are all about controlling the subject. You don't think Annie Lieberwitz gets the shot by chance, do you?

Thanks Jonathan. There has been some debate in my class regarding the people in the background! I rather like them, I think it gives some context, that this is an event rather than me dragging the poor soul to the lake to do a picture. But I take your point about them being distracting, others have said this too. I need to get more confident in directing my subjects, that's true. I still suffer from 'oh dear, I'm taking up their precious time' syndrome, although I'm getting better at it the more I do it! Practice practice practice.

I think it's nicely balanced and there's the fun of his name on the flippers. Very froggy.

Hello, enjoyed your work on TV, love the matter of fact expression on this guy's face, a slight hint of irony! It has an interesting feel of a studio shot, outdoors, regards, Tone...

Liz, I think the composition of this shot is excellent and in my view the tree and the people in the background add to the picture. Although the picture is essentially a portrait it gives us far more than simply portraying "Colin" and also shows us a context for his outfit and allows us to imagine the day he has had or is about to have. CONGRATULATIONS, I only found "Picture this" after missing the first episodes but was rooting for you all the way. You showed amazing courage and ability and I hope this opportunity brings you everything it can. Good luck.

Hi Liz, the lake gives the image context, not the background people. I have to disagree with you about showing an event? What event. i understand he is not on his own...but at an event? i think I would need something more obvious. However I still like the image but you do need to take control when making a portrait, i don't necessarily mean moving things about in the frame either but just being confident enough for someone to stand still long enough for you to shoot a roll on, sorry digital friends, 10 frames or more. You know all you have to do is pretend to be confident, put on a little show, you can do it.
