The Colour Red

"If one says 'Red' – the name of color – and there are fifty people listening, it can be expected that there will be fifty reds in their minds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different."

Josef Albers (German-born American Abstract Painter and Designer. 1888-1976.)

Red has so many rich associations; blood, flowers, fire, the sky at sunset... It catches people's attention, and is often used either in a negative way to indicate danger and emergency, or in a positive way in advertising to gain more viewers, or in nature, as a ripe fruit announces its readiness with its red color.

It is said to increase enthusiasm, stimulate energy, encourage action and confidence and it provides a sense of protection from fears and anxiety.

But as Josef Albers noticed- while I might be thinking of Santa Claus’ robe you probably have another shade of Red in mind- Alizarin, Burgundy, Cardinal, Carmine, Coral, Crimson, Rust, Scarlet, Venetian Red or maybe Vermilion?

It doesn’t matter- go out, paint the town red and show us your picture!

I agree entirely but if you ever have commissioned photo work it is a great tool and skill to have.
