Going for a Walk

The best way to experience landscape is to walk in it. Local park, city streets, beach, open countryside or mountains; however physically easy or demanding, the walk helps us tune in to the sensations of the landscape more deeply. The pace of the walk helps us take in detail, to stop and think, and to study what we choose to with our cameras.

Ask yourself what is most interesting as you move through the landscape. What are your emotional responses to the landscape? How can those feelings best be conveyed? What are the lines, shapes, textures, and colours that impress, or intrigue, the most? Does the motion of the walk itself suggest an image? The perspective created by a path? Or the details that catch your eyes by the wayside, such as wildflowers or tree roots? It could be the curious juxtaposition of unrelated natural and man-made elements. Perhaps it is the grand gesture of nature, such as an ancient oak tree, or a view of distant mountains. Or the tired and happy faces of our fellow walkers. The tiredness experienced after a vigorous uphill walk can inspire a deep sense of relaxation that inspires us to see things differently.

Whatever it is, and whatever the photographic techniques used to express the experiences of the walk, try to condense the idea into the fewest number of pictures possible. Maybe even one! Whether complex or simple, make the idea as coherent as possible, distill the essence. Even if the best result is a sequence or group of pictures.

Finally: walk further, think more, connect with the place, snap less!
