Illumination

How do you feel about using photography to throw light on a subject?
This week we would like you to explore the idea of illumination.

Either show us how light, whether natural or artificial, can be used to illuminate a subject – a scene, a building, maybe a person – or convey to us through your photograph a process of enlightenment or the growth of understanding. You might even manage to show both meanings in a single image!

The use of lighting in photography is crucial to establishing mood and drama, whether it be cityscapes at night, naturally lit landscapes, or studio portraiture. Use your imagination and think creatively about using the available lighting to best effect, whatever the subject, or using flash skilfully.

And why not try out this week’s tone mapping technique?

We hope you have fun with the creative challenge of this project!

Recent festivals of light in Glasgow and Northumberland show the role of illumination in promoting a sense of place.

This is a great project as it has opened up a new genre of photograhpy for me. As a photographer who was part afraid of PS and part dispised the process of altering images taken. I can now say the sleeper has woken. Thank you.
