Capturing The Moment

By Jamie Mellor posted 15/02/08

Framing and waiting is a technique often used to capture the moment. Simply frame the shot exactly how you want it and wait for something to come along.

When looking for a subject to shoot, always have your camera prepared for the unexpected; there is nothing worse than missing a potentially great shot because you had no time to adjust your camera's ISO, exposure, and white balance settings

Alternative Perspectives

Look for unusual viewpoints, crouch down, look up and find high spaces to look down. In this photograph I wanted the main subject to look vulnerable; crouching down to get to eye level with the model helps the subject communicate with the viewer, which in turn gave the figure in the background a more imposing gesture.

Using Silhouettes

When there is strong backlighting, experiment with exposure, and take full advantage of the shapes that silhouettes can reveal. As silhouettes only reveal the outline of a subject, think carefully about the angle you choose to shoot from; a side shot of a man's head reveals much more of the shape his face, than if he was facing the lens.
